Health Risk of going Bananas


Eating bananas in moderation comes with no significant side effects. Excessive is when you eat dozens of bananas everyday which is quite unlikely except you are a monkey. But consuming the fruit in excess quantities can cause the followings;

Headaches and Sleepiness

Headaches can be caused by the amino acids found in the fruit which causes blood vessels to dilate. The overripe bananas contain more amino acids than the greener ones. Too much of the amino acid; Tryptophan in the blood can contribute to sleepiness.

Tooth decay

Banana is a sugary fruit, so consuming too many and not keeping a proper dental hygiene can lead to tooth decay.

Hyperkalemia

Hyperkalemia; too much of potassium in the blood, can result from eating at least 43 bananas in a short time (that’s a record to break). Symptoms are muscle weakness, temporary paralysis and irregular heartbeat.

Beta-blockers

If you are on any medications for heart disease and hypertension, you should consume high potassium foods in moderation in other to prevent high potassium levels. Beta-blockers on their own can cause increase potassium levels in the blood. So see your doctor before going bananas.

Kidney problems

If your kidneys are not fully functional, they might not be unable to remove excess potassium from the blood which can lead to Hyperkalemia.
